Are you passionate about sharing your knowlege of science and the night sky with tamariki?

We are looking for an experienced and dynamic Kaiako Māori to join the team at Te Ara Whānui Ki Te Rangi Space Place. You’ll develop and deliver learning programmes to inspire ākonga from both Māori medium and English medium settings, bringing to life our key themes of science, the night sky, space and the solar system through a te ao Māori lens.

Our programmes for schools range from interactive workshops to planetarium shows on a range of themes including Ngā Tohunga Whakatere: The Navigators.

This role is part of our Learning team. It is based at Te Ara Whānui Ki Te Rangi Space Place at the Carter Observatory, in Wellington Botanic Gardens and offers the opportunity to collaborate across other Experience Wellington sites – City Gallery Wellington, Wellington Museum, and Capital E. The position is permanent, full-time. Evening and weekend work may be required.

Te tūranga | The role

You will:
• Deliver engaging learning sessions to tamariki and rangatahi at all levels from ECE to secondary, in both te reo Māori and English.
• Research and develop space and science programmes from a Te Ao Māori perspective.
• Develop innovative ways to support kaiako and bring local curriculum to life.
• Actively support our aims to increase engagement with Kura Kaupapa Māori, and bilingual units in schools.
• Work closely with other members of the Experience Wellington Learning Team including the Learning Specialist – Science to deliver programmes at Space Place, and the Kaiako Māori – History at Wellington Museum to ensure a strong te ao Māori presence in our Learning Team.

Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako |The essential skills and experience for the role

You will:
• Be a strong educator, confident in working with groups of tamariki and rangatahi.
• Have knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, The New Zealand Curriculum and/or Te Whāriki. Knowledge of Ministry of Education-funded ELC (formerly LEOTC) programming and reporting is an advantage.
• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills including fluency in te reo Māori.
• Have excellent organisational skills and strong creative ideas
• Be a great team player – creative, reliable, proactive, and positive.
• Have strong knowledge and interest in science and space sciences, and the ability to make complex ideas accessible for your audiences.
